Writer of the Month

This month I am pleased to share the work of James B. Peters. He has been a frequent contributor to Shemom since 2014, we both love the farming life.

James B. Peters got into writing while attending Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He graduated with a degree in creative writing, class of “97” at the age of 59. His work appeared in the yearbook two years running and in the English Departments annual publication. His first published work was in David Priebe’s “Haiku Headlines.” He was the last person to receive his poet of the month award. Recently some of James’ poems have appeared in “Bear Creek Haiku”, “Bottle Rockets”, “Write On!”, “Ribbons”, and some local publications.

On the autumn equinox
The maple leaves aglow
Twin daughters born
The sun shines
Every day.

**

On the hill
Spring daffodils
Still form the border
Of the old farm garden.
Each year they remember.

**

New Year’s Day,
In the pasture
An old cow
Guides a new calf
To the barn.

**

Five a.m.
Can just see
The cardinal at the feeder.

**

In a summer garden
Bubblegum petunias
Burst into bloom

**

The bat’s deli
A summer
Street light.

**

A July afternoon,
A jazz band
of cicadas.

**

Tadpoles
The submariners
Of the water puddle

**

Flat stones
Two boys,
A quiet pond.

**

Nine year old poet
Fishing
For words.

**

viewing
his second total eclipse
the old poet.

**

More than fifty years ago
There was this pretty girl
Who on the day we married
Saw the fool I am
And yet she stays.

**

The morning
Dew wet grass,
So cool.
Aged love
Awash in time.
